Climate Change 101

I've heard of "global warming". Is the globe really warmer? What's going on?

Why is it happening?

GLOBAL WARMING AKA CLIMATE CHANGE, is happening because of trapped carbon emissions in our atmosphere. There are different beliefs as to why our climate is truly changing, but the two main arguments are global climate patterns & human impact. Although it is true that our Earth has gone through multiple stages of warming throughout history, human consumption and production has never been greater, so it is safe to argue that humans are contributing GREATLY to today's climate change.

What's the impact?

There's A LOT. Just to name a few...

  • Animal Extinction

  • Extreme Weather Patterns

  • Ocean Acidification

And this is OUR EARTH! We live in this ecosystem we're hurting.

Even if these impacts seem distant, they affecting us in many ways.

What's next?

In the 2018 report published by the US government, scientists and experts predict for the next decades:

Increased Global Warming

  • Best-case: +1.1 degrees

  • Worst-case: +9 degrees

  • continued environmental impacts

increased Economic Burdens

  • Farms: extreme drought, flooding, & heat will hurt livestock

  • Seafood Industry: $230 mil loss due to ocean acidification

  • Infrastructure: money loss due to fires, flooding, & harder to maintain energy systems

Increased Health Impacts

  • Greater premature deaths due to heat (up to 2,000 additional per year by 2090)

  • Worsened asthma & allergies

  • Greater exposure to foodborne and waterborne diseases
